Located in the beautiful Savannah Region of north-western Ghana, Mole National Park is the country's largest wildlife refuge. Covering over 4,500 square kilometers of rolling savannah and dramatic escarpments, it offers one of the most accessible and authentic safari experiences in West Africa.
*Note: Big cats like leopards exist here, but they are highly elusive and rarely spotted.
When to Visit
Your experience depends entirely on the season you choose to travel.
Dry Season (Nov - April) *Best for Wildlife*
Vegetation is thin, and water is scarce. Animals are forced to gather around permanent watering holes near the lodges. This is the absolute best time for clear photography and guaranteed elephant sightings.
Wet Season (May - Oct)
The park transforms into a lush, green paradise. While animals spread out and are harder to find in the tall grass, this is the perfect time for birdwatching and enjoying the park without the crowds.
Types of Safaris
Mole is unique because it is one of the few places in Africa where you can track megafauna on foot!
- 🥾 Guided Walking Safaris: The absolute highlight. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you'll walk into the bush, track animal prints, and get thrillingly close to wild elephants. (Highly recommended!)
- 🚙 4x4 Game Drives: Cover more ground in a customized safari vehicle. Best done in the early morning or late afternoon to escape the heat.
- 🔦 Night Safaris: Use spotlights to search for nocturnal animals like civets, genets, and perhaps a spotted hyena.
Where to Stay
There are two main options located right inside the park on a cliff overlooking the elephant watering holes:
1. Zaina Lodge (Luxury)
West Africa’s first luxury safari lodge. Offers stunning infinity pools, fine dining, and beautiful tented chalets. Perfect if you want an all-inclusive, high-end experience.
2. Mole Motel (Budget/Standard)
A state-run motel offering a range of rooms from budget dorms to air-conditioned chalets. It has a pool, a restaurant, and unbeatable access to the safari trailheads at a fraction of the cost.
3. Eco-Villages (Outside Park)
For backpackers and culture-seekers, nearby villages like Larabanga offer cheap homestays and community guesthouses.
How to Get There
Mole is remote, located nearly 700km north of the capital, Accra. You have two main options:
Fly from Accra (ACC) to Tamale (TML). The flight takes about 1 hour. From Tamale, you'll need to hire a taxi, arrange a lodge transfer, or take a public bus for the 2-hour drive to the park gates.
Take a VIP or STC coach from Accra or Kumasi directly to Tamale. Be warned: the bus from Accra takes 12-15 hours. It's much cheaper, but a grueling journey.
Important Park Rules
- No Drones: Drones are strictly forbidden without complex national permits. Do not bring one; it will be confiscated.
- Stay Inside at Night: Do not walk around the lodge grounds at night. Hippos, buffalo, and elephants roam freely.
- Armed Guides are Mandatory: Never wander into the bush without an official park ranger.
Nearby Cultural Sites
Combine your wildlife safari with a touch of local culture:
- Larabanga Mosque: Visit one of West Africa's oldest mosques (built in the 1400s), famous for its striking black-and-white mud architecture.
- Mognori Eco-Village: Just outside the park, take a canoe safari, see how shea butter is made, and enjoy traditional drumming and dancing.
