The deer hunt at dawn: what Aboakyer actually is
Aboakyer means “animal catching”, and the hunt is the heart of the festival. On the first Saturday of May the town’s two Asafo companies, Tuafo and Dentsefo, set out at dawn for the bush near Winneba to catch a live bushbuck (the “deer”) with their bare hands. The first company back presents the animal, alive, to the Omanhene and the priests at the Penkye Otu shrine, where it is read as an omen for the year ahead before the durbar of chiefs, the drumming and the parades begin.
The next Aboakyer is expected on Saturday 1 May 2027 (the first Saturday of May, which is also Workers’ Day). Winneba is about 1.5 to 2 hours west of Accra by road; STC and VIP coaches run from Accra, or hire a driver and arrive early for the hunt.
